Our Prevention Program keeps families and individuals from needing to rely on a homeless shelter. Our Housing Search Program gets individuals and families out of shelters and into homes. We ensure all these people never return to the position they were in when they first reached out to us with our Stabilization Services.
Utilizing a combination of housing and stabilization knowledge, mediation techniques, legal advocacy, and flexible monetary funds – we help high-risk households retain their housing and avoid going to shelters. In 2014, the average rental assistance payment through our Prevention Program was $750, while the average cost to the state for providing emergency shelter is around $30,000.
Our advocates work with clients from over 50 shelters and programs to obtain apartments and subsidized housing. We provide care and support to help our clients navigate through the difficult process of transitioning from a shelter to a permanent home.
The greatest challenge individuals face after moving into a permanent home is maintaining it. We help each participant reintegrate into the community with services such as money management programs and life skills training. As of 2014, 95% of our stabilization clients were still in housing one year later.
This program assists disabled individuals in moving directly from the streets and into permanent housing. We provide these individuals with full support services as they obtain the life skills, as well as the physical and psychological attention they need to maintain housing.
In partnership with Boston’s 10% homeless set-aside program, we operate a vacancy clearinghouse to provide those who are homeless with government- funded housing units in Boston. We conduct outreach to property management companies, then streamline the tenant application process, match tenants to units, and also provide them with follow-up support services.
In partnerships with the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Boston Housing Authority, our advocates assist homeless military veterans and veteran families throughout the Greater Boston area in the housing search process and then provide them with upfront financial costs upon move-in.
